About
Carolina Barcenas is the head of Platform Data Science at Airbnb. She came to Airbnb from Visa Inc. At Visa, Carolina was the head of the research organization responsible for innovation in Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain and Security. She transformed the research organization, taking it from fundamental research to a division that became an innovation power-house that creates new products and prototypes, generating value for Visa.
Before Visa she was at Paypal where she was responsible for managing the risk of small and medium merchants. The role had full responsibility over Policy, Strategy and Analytics, working in collaboration with Operations, Product and Engineering to build the functionality to manage risk.
She is an active sponsor of numerous diversity and inclusion programs. Carolina holds a B.S. Summa Cum Laude in Industrial Physics Engineering and a M.S. in Systems and Quality from the Monterrey Institute of Technology. She also holds an M.S. and Ph.D. as a Fulbright Scholar in Operations Research, Applied Statistics from the Georgia Institute of Technology. She has seven granted/patent pending patents related to the development and deployment of artificial intelligence applications. She has received several awards such as the Top 100 Most Influential Women in Tech as well as the HITEC 100 award.
